As you may have noticed I am super excited about vision boards. That’s because they’ve been a long-time success ally.

Most of the time when people set S.M.A.R.T. goals, I make a vision board.

Not to say that S.M.A.R.T. goals are not useful or that they don’t work.

But I find vision boards to be more fun, more powerful, more effective and a lot less stressful.

VISION BOARDS: THE EXPRESS LANE

The first time I got my hand at manifesting anything, I took myself from entry-level sales person college drop-out to high-level executive in the matter of a few months.

With a S.M.A.R.T. goal, I would have been toast.

My dazzling 19 years old college-drop out resume wasn’t exactly going to get me far.

My lack of qualifications, connection, lack of funding in dinosaur pre-internet era (think no networking on Linkedin, no social media…) meant that I would have add to put in years of serious hussle to get anywhere.

By the way, if you don’t know what smart goal stands for here’s what that means:

S: specific

M: measurable

A: achievable

R: realistic

T: time-based

So using a S.M.A.R.T. goal methodology, my dream of a dramatically better life fast would have been killed by A (achievable).

What I did instead was use manifestation.

At the time I didn’t use a vision board per-se but I used some of the principles that I now include in creating and using a vision board:

    – A burning desire
    – Insane clarity
    – Laser focus
A total disregard for what seemed reasonable or achievable

I didn’t stress, I didn’t huff and puff, I didn’t try to connect with people.

I didn’t try to put my stellar resume in front of important eyeballs.

In fact, at the time I was so busy trying to keep my life afloat that I did absolutely nothing that would normally have qualified as talking action to solve my predicament.

And still, I got a huge breakthrough within a few months.

That’s the difference!

With the S.M.A.R.T. goal method, my vision of a better life would not have been an option or I would have had to make a 5 year plan to make it happen. (Also not an option: I was mi-se-ra-ble. I needed a massive change, fast!).

With manifestation, I got what I wanted in less than 6 months without breaking a sweat.

See why I get so hyper about this?

VISION BOARDS: A BETTER MOOD

Now, don’t get me wrong I still use traditional goal-setting for certain specific goals such as those that mostly rely on me taking a specific action, like the ‘I will do 90 sit-ups 3 times a week’ type of goals for instance.

But when I need to uplevel, solve complicated problems, when I need to achieve stretch goals, my tool of choice is manifestation.

And then I usually make a vision board.

Actually even for a ‘I will do 90 sit-ups 5 times a week for 2 months’ goal a vision board still has an edge.

When you say ‘I will do 90 sit-ups 5 times a week for 2 months’ there’s a certain weight, a sense of obligation that comes with this statement.

Let’s flip that around vision board style. It could look like this:

Imagine a board with:

    – pictures of the flatter stomach you want,
    – pictures of you in your favorite little black dress you that doesn’t fit anymore,
    – pictures of a couple of new dresses you’ll treat yourself to when you’ve reached your desired figure.
    – Add to that some quotes that celebrate how great you feel about being back at your ideal shape.

That gives you get a completely different mood!

The ’90 sit-ups 5 days a week’ makes you dread all the hard-work ahead of you.

The vision board makes you want to throw a party to celebrate your awesomeness.

Totally different energy!

And the beauty of this celebratory energy is that from a manifestation stand-point feeling good attract everything you need to reach your goal easily.

Whereas with the ’90 sit-ups a day’ goal you’re left to figure out how to get yourself motivation, with the vision board, as you bask in the glory of your success, doors open for you.

    – A health-club opens down the street and you get a huge new member discount.
    – You find a fun and motivating trainer who offers to train you at home.
    – You stumble upon a video that shows you a super easy exercise that knocks the sit-ups out of the park when it comes to giving you a flat stomach fast.
