Designing a life is an exciting idea instead of being the victim of circumstances. Nothing beats choosing the features of your life!
I’m a former interior designer so I know there’s a lot more to good design than picking pretty pillows and that goes for life as well. In life people tend to pick the money shots, you know, the smile, the beach, but they don’t know the behind-the-scenes.
The truth is, just like interior design, life design requires a bit of careful planning.
And today I’m gonna share with you some steps I recommend to make sure the life you design not only looks good on the outside but also feels good on the inside.
Hey everyone this is Dominique Andersen, welcome to stretchandbloom sound byte where in five minutes or less I will give you a quick tip to create a life you love.
So before getting started there’s a paradigm shift I’d like you to make and that’s what I call going from victim to Victor. I think a lot of us are going through life with the feeling that things happen to them.
And for you to be able to design your life you’re gonna need to switch this belief system to ‘I have the power to make things happen in my life’.
Okay now that this is out of the way, let’s go to step one which is soul-searching.
I always insist on soul-searching because the first mistake people make when they design their lives is to be superficial. It’s like starting to design your home by picking the pillows.
The thing is, first before designing anything you need to understand what you want to experience. And most of us get programmed by society, by parents, ads, etc and we are trained to want things that we don’t really want. So before you get stuck, soul-searching!
The second step is to create a vision for every aspect of your life. So in the last episode I was talking about how people’s often fail to plan for a holistic life. They focus on prestige, they focus on money, but they don’t focus on all the other aspects. So you want to make sure that every single aspect of your life has a clear vision attached to it.
The third step is to reverse-engineer.
So once you know what your dream looks like it’s a lot easier to create it. What you need to do is go to the end, reverse-engineer to where you are, break down the action steps in little chunks and take action!
Sounds simple, doesn’t mean it’s easy.
There are a few things you need to watch out for.
One is your ability to stay on track: accountability, distractions, motivations. You have to make sure everything is lined up for you to succeed.
The second thing is changes down the road.
Obviously between the moment when you start following an objective and the moment when you get there a lot of things can happen. And you’re gonna learn about your dreams, you’re gonna realize that some aspect of your ideal life don’t actually inspire you anymore. And as you proceed you may need to adapt your objective.
Which leads me to the fourth point which is to course-correct.
You need to regularly assess what you are, assess where you’re going, assess if your objective, your vision, your dream life, everything still makes sense. Take stock of where you are, what you’ve achieved and what has developed and update your vision accordingly.
Alright?!
So those were my four main steps to help you design a life that not only looks good on the outside but actually feels good on the inside.
And quick little tip: if you want a cheat sheet to actually follow through, so as a system I’ve put all these steps and more in a virtual workshop. I’m gonna drop the link in the show notes below so if you feel you need help with the whole system make sure to check that out well.
That’s it for today!
